About The Position
As a Benefits Planner, you will provide individualized benefits counseling services to peers who receive public benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Your role will guide peers in making informed decisions about employment and financial independence, helping them understand how employment impacts their benefits. You’ll collaborate closely with peers, educational institutions, and the employment support team to create personalized plans that integrate education, work, and financial well-being.

What You’ll Do
Peer Benefits Assessment
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify peers’ eligibility for public benefits, including SSDI, SSI, Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, and housing assistance.
Benefits Counseling
- Advise peers on the impact of employment on their benefits and explain work incentive programs like Ticket to Work and PASS plans.
- Develop individualized benefits plans that outline how educational and employment decisions may affect peers’ financial situations.
Individualized Benefits Planning
- Create personalized benefits plans to support peers’ employment and educational goals. Ensure they understand their options for benefits continuation or adjustments.
- Assist peers in navigating educational programs aligned with their career and benefits plans.
Advocacy & Partnerships
- Act as a liaison between peers and government agencies, advocating for peer rights and providing ongoing support.
- Establish partnerships with local agencies and advocacy groups to expand peer support networks.
Training & Education
- Conduct workshops and informational sessions for peers, families, and community partners about employment impacts on benefits and available work incentives.
Collaboration & Support
- Work closely with employment specialists and educational support staff to coordinate peer services and ensure appropriate accommodations.
- Help peers access resources like tutoring, financial aid, disability services, and career counseling.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain detailed records of peer interactions, assessments, and plans to meet program guidelines and reporting needs.
Qualifications
- Certified Benefits Planner (CBP) or Work Incentives Practitioner certification preferred; willingness to obtain certification is accepted.
- NC Certified Peer Support Specialist.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in benefits planning, social services, or a related field (experience with individuals with disabilities preferred).
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state benefits programs and work incentive programs.
- Experience with employment services or vocational rehabilitation programs.
- Leadership skills, demonstrating PRN’s mission and values.
- Personal history of recovery and experience seeking crisis-based support.
- Strong communication skills (oral and written), with active listening and non-judgmental support.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and complete tasks with limited supervision.
- Proficiency in computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations).
- Basic knowledge of community support services and resources.
