About The Position
As a Peer Employment Specialist, you will provide employment and educational support to individuals facing mental health challenges or disabilities. Drawing from your own lived recovery experience, you will help peers explore career and educational opportunities, secure employment, and achieve success in their educational pursuits. You will work closely with employment and education teams to offer tailored guidance and encouragement.

What You’ll Do
- Community Engagement: Build trusting, collaborative relationships with community partners and employers to facilitate competitive employment opportunities for peers.
- Peer Support: Use your background and work experience to help peers access and assess vocational functioning. Provide education and support to peers and their natural supports as needed.
- Benefit Assistance: Guide peers in understanding how employment may affect their benefits.
- Job Development: Conduct job searches and activities that align with peers’ career and educational goals. Reach out to potential employers to understand their business needs and communicate the support offered by the Peer-Run Employment and Career Support Program.
- Ongoing Support: Ensure peers are matched with employment opportunities that fit their goals and provide continuous support to help maintain their employment.
- Collaboration and Planning: Work with peers to develop job support plans, incorporating feedback from their support network. Develop individual employment and career plans that integrate educational goals.
- Employer Education: Provide education and support to employers, including negotiating job accommodations and maintaining follow-up contact as agreed upon by peers.
- Outreach and Interventions: Offer outreach services when peers disengage, and provide timely support to respond effectively to challenges.
- Group Facilitation: Lead employment support group meetings for peers seeking work.
- Field Work: Plan work hours in the community, including accompanying peers to interviews, navigating public transportation, and supporting educational pursuits.
- Educational Support: Help peers access academic resources like tutoring, financial aid, and disability accommodations. Assist with enrollment for GED programs, vocational training, community college, or higher education.
- Barrier Navigation: Assist peers in identifying strengths, overcoming obstacles, and developing strategies for success in their employment and education journeys.
Qualifications
- NC Certified Peer Support Specialist.
- Strong belief in the recovery potential of all individuals and commitment to the peer support philosophy.
- Personal history of recovery and lived experience in crisis-based support.
- Leadership qualities that model PRN’s mission, values, and philosophy.
- Ability to manage time and tasks independently, with limited supervision.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrating active and reflective listening, non-judgmental support, and effective conflict resolution.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the public, providers, and community stakeholders.
- Proficiency in computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations).
- Basic knowledge of community support services and resources.
