About The Position

The Hub Peer Support Specialist is a key member of the PRN team, providing compassionate, trauma-informed, person-centered peer support services within the Recovery Hub, including the Recovery Café and harm reduction programs. This role helps create a safe, inclusive, and empowering space for individuals on their recovery journey. This position is ideal for someone with lived experience of recovery from substance use, mental health challenges, or both, who is passionate about harm reduction, mutual aid, and community wellness. The Peer Support Specialist position will assist in daily activities at the Recovery Hub, including the Recovery Cafe and Harm Reduction.

These responsibilities include providing peer support, facilitating classes, conducting outreach to community partners, inventory management, and sharing lived experience with community members that attend the hub/cafe. The peer support specialist support focuses on increasing the individual’s desire to live as independently as possible and being an active participant in their recovery journey while reestablishing their community roles related to the 8 dimensions of wellness as defined by SAMSHA (ex. Spiritual, Emotional, Physical, Occupational, Social, Intellectual, Environmental, Financial). They will be responsible for ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment, assisting visitors with inquiries, and providing administrative support to the organization and leadership team. The Peer Support Specialist will provide administrative support to the organization by utilizing multiple EHR systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and other applications as identified.

What You’ll Do

  • Recovery Café Support 
    • Welcome and engage guests at the Recovery Café, creating a trauma-informed, non-judgmental environment. 
    • Facilitate or co-facilitate recovery circles, peer groups, or wellness activities as needed. 
    • Assist with operations of the Café including setup, cleanliness, and tracking member participation. 
    • Provide support to guests navigating recovery resources, including emotional support, goal-setting, and advocacy. 
    • Promote and maintain the principles of the Recovery Café model: radical hospitality, loving accountability, and community healing.
  • Harm Reduction & Outreach 
    • Support individuals who use substances with non-coercive, judgment-free care rooted in harm reduction principles. 
    • Assist with distribution of harm reduction supplies (e.g., naloxone, safer use kits) and provide education around safe use practices. 
    • Offer linkage to services including detox, MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment), syringe services, housing, or mental health support. 
    • Engage in street outreach, tabling events, or community education efforts to build trust and reduce stigma around substance use and mental health. 
    • Track and report supply usage and engagement data in accordance with program requirements.
  • Peer Support Services 
    • Build authentic, mutual relationships based on shared experience, empathy, and respect. 
    • Provide one-on-one peer support focused on self-directed recovery goals, navigating systems, and building resilience. 
    • Model recovery and wellness through healthy boundaries, self-care, and hope. 
    • Collaborate with other peer staff and clinicians to ensure holistic, person-centered care. 
    • Maintain documentation and data entry as required by PRN policy and funding sources.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Must identify as a person with lived experience of recovery from substance use, mental health challenges, or both. 
  • Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) in North Carolina or willingness to obtain certification within 6 months of hire. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of harm reduction, recovery models (including non-abstinence pathways), and trauma-informed care. 
  • Ability to relate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, especially people experiencing homelessness, incarceration, poverty, or active substance use. 
  • Excellent communication, de-escalation, and active listening skills. 
  • Commitment to equity, justice, and community-based solutions. 
  • Bilingual candidates and individuals with past experience in harm reduction, outreach, or Recovery Cafés are strongly encouraged to apply.  

Work Environment

  • This position requires flexibility to work some evenings, weekends, and outreach shifts. 
  • Work is performed in a variety of settings including PRN’s Recovery Hub, community locations, and outdoors. 
  • Must be comfortable with occasional exposure to overdose risk situations, individuals in crisis, and other high-stress environments — with strong staff support and supervision available.
