About The Position
The Respite Peer Support Specialist provides overnight peer support services to guests at our peer-run respite house. In this role, you’ll build meaningful connections grounded in lived experience, create a welcoming and safe environment, and model recovery-focused support without judgment. You’ll work overnight shifts to support guests navigating mental health challenges, offering warmth, compassion, and community. This position is ideal for someone who values peer-centered recovery and is ready to hold space during quiet hours when connection is needed most.

What You’ll Do
- Peer Support & Connection
Create authentic, mutual relationships with respite guests using your own recovery story. Provide emotional support, active listening, and a calming presence during overnight stays. - Safety & Wellness Monitoring
Monitor the safety and wellbeing of guests throughout the night, supporting individual recovery goals and providing non-clinical crisis support as needed. - Daily House Operations
Maintain a clean and welcoming environment, assist with household responsibilities, and help ensure smooth transitions between shifts. - Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with fellow Peer Support Specialists and PRN team members to ensure continuity of care and uphold the core values of trauma-informed peer support. - Documentation & Reporting
Accurately document interactions, guest updates, and shift summaries in accordance with organizational policies.
Qualifications
- Certification
NC Certified Peer Support Specialist certification or willingness to obtain it. - Lived Experience
Personal experience navigating mental health or substance use recovery is required—this role is about walking with others, not ahead of them. - Communication & Interpersonal Skills
Strong ability to listen, build trust, and engage in mutual, respectful relationships with guests and team members. - Night Shift Readiness
Comfortable working overnight hours (third shift) and remaining alert, available, and responsive to guest needs. - Commitment to Recovery Values
Belief in person-centered recovery, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and the value of self-determination.
