About The Position

As a Respite Peer Support Specialist, you’ll provide trauma-sensitive peer-to-peer support at PRN’s new Wake County respite location. This role involves offering advocacy, connecting guests to local resources, and supporting mental health wellness. You’ll also facilitate group and one-on-one mutual support, manage the peer warm line if needed, and ensure that guests feel empowered and supported throughout their stay.

Hours/Shift: 11:30pm – 8am

 

What You’ll Do

Guest Support

  • Share your lived experience to support and validate different pathways of recovery for guests.
  • Assist guests in connecting with mental health services, housing resources, and community services.
  • Offer peer-to-peer support during all phases of a guest’s stay, including pre-arrival, arrival, departure, and after-care planning.
  • Facilitate wellness and recovery activities during downtime with guests.
  • Provide telephone support to peers in the community through the 24-hour peer warm line.
  • Recognize the difference between mental health crises and emergencies, connecting individuals to appropriate services when necessary.

Team Involvement and Respite Management

  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and healing environment, ensuring the respite feels like a welcoming bed-and-breakfast-like space.
  • Collaborate with the Respite team through clear and respectful communication, working together to support guests.
  • Be open to feedback, guidance, and mentoring to grow in your skills and knowledge as a peer support specialist.
  • Complete all required documentation, tracking, and reporting as assigned.
  • Contribute to the overall management and success of the respite center by supporting special projects and tasks as assigned by leadership.

 

Qualifications

  • NC Certified Peer Support Specialist (or willingness to achieve certification within 6 months).
  • Personal history of mental health and/or substance abuse recovery and lived experience in seeking crisis-based support.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and practices.
  • Valid Driver’s License and High School Diploma/GED.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with limited supervision.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to remain non-judgmental and empathetic in challenging situations.
  • Experience in managing time, completing tasks, and maintaining calm and empathy with individuals in emotional distress.
  • Basic knowledge of community support services and resources.
