Our Truth

Healing Others by Sharing Your Own Story

Meet Nick, a Peer Support Specialist who attended PRN’s Peer Academy to strengthen the skills he uses to uplift others.

Through training, Nick learned how to transform trauma into a source of power, connection, and healing both for himself and for the people he supports.

Shelter Plus Care in Action

When Moshika needed support for her and her son, PRN’s Shelter Plus Care program stepped in, helping her strengthen her tenancy skills and get essentials like a stove for her home. Shelter Plus Care is peer-led, providing:

  • Housing navigation
  • Help understanding the process
  • Practical skills for long‑term stability
  • Ongoing peer support to build community, employment, or education at your own pace.

From Support to Leadership

Janie came into the Charlotte Recovery Hub & Café looking for support, and she is one of the leaders shaping its future.

She takes classes, volunteers, mentors others, and serves on our Peer Leader Council, helping create a space where peers feel empowered, connected, and capable of success.

Finding Community, Building a Career with PRN's Support

Desmond came to PRN during a difficult time in his life, while staying in a shelter and doing everything he could to keep moving forward. What he found at PRN was more than just resources. It was a sense of community, belonging, and possibility.

Through classes and encouragement, Desmond gained valuable life skills and discovered new opportunities. Desmond followed through, stayed consistent, and worked toward his goal. Today, he’s a licensed cosmetologist, practicing in his field and building a future he once could only imagine.

Empowered to Support Others in Healing & Recovery

Sara is a PRN employee who has grown alongside her recovery journey. Starting at the front desk, Sarah then stepped into a new role as a Peer Support Specialist and along the way, gained invaluable tools through our Peer Academy.

Through training and hands‑on learning, Sara developed skills in communication, empowerment, and peer leadership. These tools help strengthen her ability to support others and lead by example within the peer community.

A Space to Heal and Be Understood

Ryan came to PRN’s Respite at the Plaza as a guest during a vulnerable time in life and found something deeper than support. While they had worked with peer services before, this was the first time the experience truly felt mutual. At the Respite, Ryan felt understood instead of judged or pitied. The sense of shared experience created a space where guests and peer supporters stood together, learning from and supporting one another.

Because of that healing experience, Ryan now dreams of giving back. From becoming a peer supporter to sharing information through zines, cooking meals for others, and even creating content to help people navigate challenges, Ryan’s story shows how authentic peer connection can inspire hope, purpose, and a desire to uplift others.

Turning Life Experiences into Strength & Supporting Others

Raven came to PRN’s Peer Academy during a powerful period of learning and self‑reflection. Through the experience, Raven gained tools for offering support, understanding healthy boundaries, and listening to others’ stories with care and respect.

With PRN’s support, Raven also experienced personal healing. For the first time, Raven felt free from shame about past incarceration and empowered to see those experiences as sources of strength and wisdom. This opportunity allowed Raven to grow professionally and confidently share her own story and move forward with renewed purpose and pride.
